European ‘Open Strategic Autonomy’ in practice

In the context of the challenges brought about by the rise of China, the COVID-19 crisis, as well as the green and digital transitions, the Commission further elaborates on what the concept of 'Open Strategic Autonomy' might mean for trade.

On February 18, the Commission published its communication on the Trade Policy Review, calling for merging trade with the EU objectives towards green and digital transitions and the EU values. Our team has elaborated a summary outlining the main aspects and trade priorities of the Commission positioning.

The Trade Policy Review focuses on six main areas, among which the reform of the WTO and the inclusion of horizontal environmental and digital objectives are the most important. The communication outlines the EU’s approach to trade relations with other countries and the criteria it will use to refine its free trade agreements. The Commission has tried in its communication to encapsulate this strengthening of European trade and respect of the EU values in the concept of open strategic autonomy.
